The cheapest system on the building, protecting the most expensive part
Guttering collects everything that lands on the roof and puts it into a drain. It is a simple system, gutters, brackets, joints, outlets, downpipes and shoes, and it fails in simple ways: joints leak, brackets sag, sections split in frost, and outlets block with moss and leaf litter until the whole run overflows.
The service covers full replacement of a failed run, repairs and re-fixing of a sound one, replacement downpipes and outlets, and correcting the falls so water actually reaches the outlet rather than sitting in the middle of the gutter.
It is worth doing properly because a gutter is only as good as its fall and its fixing. A run set level, or hung off brackets at the wrong spacing, will pond and sag no matter how new it is. And because the failure dumps water directly against the wall and behind the fascia, the consequences land on masonry, roof timbers and internal finishes rather than on the gutter itself.

A failed gutter concentrates the water from an entire roof slope onto one strip of wall, hour after hour, every time it rains. Very little else damages a building that efficiently.
Penetrating damp
Saturated brickwork lets water through to internal walls, blowing plaster and staining decoration, usually blamed on rising damp rather than the gutter above it.
Rotten fascias and rafter feet
Water running behind the gutter attacks the fascia board and the rafter ends behind it, turning a gutter job into a roofline and timber job.
Frost damage and green walls
Constantly wet masonry spalls in frost and grows algae. Both are permanent enough to need repointing or cleaning down the line.
Foundations and paths
Downpipes discharging onto the ground rather than into a drain soak the ground next to the building and undermine paths and paving.

Systems, materials and common faults
Guttering across Sussex ranges from original cast iron on period property to modern uPVC on everything since. The right answer depends on the building, the exposure and how much roof is draining into the run.
What we fit and repair
Most domestic work is uPVC in half-round, square or ogee profile, sized to the roof area draining into it. Where a property has original cast iron and the owner wants to keep the look, heritage-style profiles can be matched.

Falls, brackets and joints
A gutter needs a consistent fall towards the outlet, set out before the first bracket goes on. Bracket spacing matters just as much: too far apart and the run sags between them, which creates the pond that eventually overflows.
Joints are where most leaks happen. Unions have seals that perish, and joints made under stress will leak whatever is done to them. New sections are cut and jointed with allowance for thermal movement rather than forced into place.
Downpipes and where the water goes
A downpipe that discharges onto the ground beside the wall, or into a drain that is itself blocked, is only half a system. We check the discharge point as part of the job and connect into the gully or drainage properly.
Where a downpipe is undersized for the roof area, the gutter overflows in heavy rain even when everything else is right, so sizing is part of the quote, not an afterthought.
Blockages and maintenance
Moss shed from the roof, leaves and nesting debris are the usual causes of a blocked run, and along the Sussex coast salt and wind-blown grit add to it. Clearing is straightforward work and worth doing before autumn each year.
If a run blocks repeatedly in the same place, that is usually a fall problem rather than a debris problem, and clearing it again every year is treating the symptom.
Guttering and the roofline
Guttering, fascias and soffits are one system. There is no sense hanging a new gutter off a rotten fascia, and no sense replacing fascias without renewing the gutter on them.
Where both need doing, we quote them together; it's cheaper than two visits and two lots of access, and it means the whole eaves detail ends up right.
Domestic and commercial
Domestic runs are short, low and quick, often reachable without full scaffold. The priority is the fall, the fixing and not damaging the garden.
Commercial buildings have larger catchment areas, sometimes box or parapet gutters rather than eaves gutters, and blockages that flood interiors rather than walls. Those are surveyed and priced individually, and often benefit from planned clearing rather than reactive callouts.

How much does new guttering cost?
It depends on the length of the run, the number of downpipes, the profile and the access. We measure it on a free visit and give you one fixed written price, never a day rate.
How long does a gutter replacement take?
Most domestic replacements are a day's work. Larger properties, or jobs where fascias also need renewing, take longer and we'll tell you which yours is up front.
Can you repair my guttering rather than replace it?
Often, yes. Failed unions, a sagging bracket or a blocked outlet on an otherwise sound run are straightforward repairs, and we'll say so rather than sell you a full replacement.
How long does uPVC guttering last?
A well-fitted run on correctly spaced brackets lasts many years. What shortens it is poor falls, over-stressed joints and fixing into soft fascia timber, all of which we deal with at installation.
My gutter overflows only in heavy rain, why?
Usually a partial blockage, a lost fall, or a downpipe undersized for the roof area draining into it. We check all three rather than just clearing it out.
Do you clear blocked gutters?
Yes. If it keeps blocking in the same spot, though, that's normally a fall problem and worth correcting rather than clearing every year.
Can you match cast iron guttering on a period house?
We can fit heritage-style profiles that keep the look of the original. Tell us at the quote stage if appearance matters and we'll price accordingly.
Do I need scaffolding?
Not usually for a straightforward domestic run; it depends on the height and access. Whatever access is required is written into the fixed price.
Should the fascia be done at the same time?
If it's rotten, yes. New guttering fixed to failing timber pulls away again. We'll tell you honestly whether yours is sound enough to fix to.
Is the work guaranteed?
Yes: 25 years on our workmanship, excluding storm damage, third-party damage and material failure.
